Confused By Big Data? You Are Not Alone

MCA Article Feed.

I’ve spent time recently with our teams in South Korea, Japan and parts of Europe where I was able to speak with our channel partners and customers about Quantum’s long term vision and strategy. It seemed every time I would say the words “big data,” eyes would begin to shift and roll. When it was appropriate I asked, “Why do you react in that way when I say big data?” The responses varied, but the following paraphrased statements were the most common themes:

1.  Big data is the buzzword of the day and every vendor talks about it and claims to be an expert in this new market.
2.  What is big data, really? We have been dealing with lots of data for a long time, why is it now getting all this emphasis?
3.  Is Hadoop big data?

I’m sure if I traveled to more parts of our world, I would get similar reactions and responses. So I am taking to the internet to share this message and hopefully answer many people’s questions.

First, with regard to big data being the buzzword of the day. I agree there are many vendors who are claiming a level of expertise with regard to this “new” area of IT. Many of the customers and channel partners I spoke with asked the question, how could so many be “experts” if this is such a new area in our industry? Great question – which leads to question number two, is big data new?

Why are Hadoop and MapReduce Eating the World? (Part 1 of a Series on Hadoop Architecture)

MCA Article Feed.

As my guest blogger, Matt is starting to provide more insight about interesting subjects. Here, read part 1 of a multi-part series on the Hadoop and MapReduce architectures compared to traditional programming approaches. Why are Hadoop and MapReduce eating the world? What makes Hadoop so popular and how does Hadoop process volumes of data – dare I say it – BIG DATA – easily and cheaply? This is nice contrast to past approaches to solving this problem and the new modern  techniques being employed today. Enjoy!
