New SkyDrive photo timeline and uploads 2x faster

MCA Article Feed.

People put a lot of their stuff in SkyDrive, but photos are the most common file type we see in SkyDrive, both in sheer number and in total storage consumed.

All photos view

Starting today and rolling out over the next 48 hours, we're making it easier for you to see all of your photos in SkyDrive across all your albums and folders based on a timeline view.

SkyDrive timeline view

In the timeline view you can scroll down to navigate through all the images. They're organized into groups by event and time. Take 20 pictures at a birthday party with your phone, and then a photo of your parking spot at the airport a few hours later? Now they'll appear as two different groups in the timeline.

VIDEO: Hands-on with the Nokia Lumia 521

MCA Article Feed.

A few days ago, Michael let you know that the Nokia Lumia 521 was coming to T-Mobile.  I got my hands on one a few days before the announcement, and can confirm that this is one heck of a good phone for a really, really low price.  I’ll admit I was skeptical at first; how good could a $149 phone really be?  But once I had the chance to hold it in my hands and play with it for a day or two, my skepticism dissipated.

Check out the video for a closer look and my first impressions:

For a first-time smartphone buyer, or someone who’s upgrading from an older phone and wants something that really rocks the basics, the Lumia 521 is tough to beat.

Free Book Choice with Audible and Windows 8

MCA Article Feed.

I love books. I love them so much that there was a time in my life where I helped the school librarian every day instead of going to recess. That period of time lasted for almost two years. Even now, if given the choice between a book and doing a lot of other things, I’ll still choose the book. As I’ve grown older, I’ve come to also enjoy the audiobook. This way I can go for a run and “read” a book or drive to Vancouver without having “Thrift Shop” stuck in my head for the next week – not that I have anything against the song.

Luckily, I found Audible. Audible has apps for Windows 8 and Windows Phone that let you download and listen to books on the go. With over 135,000 titles from classics to New York Times bestsellers, you can enjoy endless hours of entertainment.

And right now Audible is running an exclusive promotion for Windows Phone and Windows 8 users:

Using named events to coordinate foreground apps and background agents

MCA Article Feed.

In Windows Phone OS 7.1, Microsoft introduced the background agents feature which enables you to periodically run a small piece of code in the background. The same technology is used for background audio playback, and in Windows Phone 8 it was extended for use in some Wallet and VoIP scenarios, too.

The crux of the background agent design is that the background code runs in a completely separate process from the foreground app. This enables the system to place tight limits on the resource usage of background functionality and minimize the impact on the foreground experience.

Catch the Windows Phone Challenge on TV during March Madness

MCA Article Feed.

Since we kicked off the Windows Phone Challenge over a year ago at CES (it was called “Smoked by Windows Phone” back then), the one question I’ve been consistently asked is:

“When do we get to see this stuff on TV?”

The answer is…THIS WEEK! A new spot that pits the Nokia Lumia 920’s PureView camera head-to-head against the Samsung Galaxy SIII will run on ESPN and CBS throughout the men’s and women’s NCAA tournament. Not a basketball fan? No worries – you can watch it online. Check it out:

The spot is 30 seconds long, but if you want to see the full video of how things unfolded with Brittany – and all of our other Windows Phone Challenge videos – head over to the Challenge Playlist on our YouTube channel.

This blog post was authored by Dan Zucker, a program manager on the Windows Phone team.

As part 2 of this two-part series, this post focuses on the great new Multilingual App Toolkit (MAT) v1.2 offered by the Windows International team. This Windows 8 tool now supports Windows Phone 8 and Windows Phone 7.5 development. Part 1 focused on providing an understanding of the standard pattern for localizing a Windows Phone 8 XAML app.

Now showing at a theater near you: The Windows Phone Challenge

MCA Article Feed.

It’s not Star Wars, but the battle scenes are just as epic.

Our popular Windows Phone Challenge video series, which pits Windows Phone 8 against other well-known smartphones, is back on the big screen.  From now through March 28, look for new content playing at top theater chains nationwide, including Lowes, Regal, AMC, and Cinemark.

The episode appears as part of NCM Media Network’s FirstLook preshow entertainment segment—you know, the fun stuff that plays just before they tell you to turn off your phone. (Here’s how to comply on a Windows Phone, BTW.)

Some of you may have seen us in theaters before. In January, millions of moviegoers saw me interrupt a young couple’s dinner date to demonstrate how much better Nokia’s Lumia 920 is at taking low-light photos than their iPhone 5. If you missed it, check out their reaction.

The episode you’ll see in theaters now shows us taking on the reigning Android king, the Samsung Galaxy SIII. Take a look:

App roundup: 5 apps to help you stay fit

MCA Article Feed.

Hi there. My name is Amy, and I'm new around here. I’ll be writing from time to time about using Windows and various cool things that go along with it. I’d like to get started by talking to you about what I think is one of the best things to happen to my exercise routine since the invention of Zumba: fitness apps.

Like Tatsuo (and just about everyone else I know), one of my New Year's resolutions was to be more active. What makes this challenging for me is a combination of being busy, and if I’m honest, just plain lazy. I generally find the idea of taking a nap way more compelling than going for a run. Even so, I know I feel better when I’m making time to be active.

Considering this, I’m so thankful I live in the age of the app. I’ve noticed that when I’m trying to stick to a new routine, if I don't track how I'm doing, I get discouraged and eventually give up. When I first started tracking my workouts, I noticed a big difference in how faithful I was about staying on track and working towards my goals. Tracking leaves no room for kidding myself and keeps me honest.

App roundup: Time savers and time wasters

MCA Article Feed.

Hi, I’m Brittany, a writer on the Windows team. Usually I write about things like the Start screen and personalizing your PC, so it’ll be a nice change of pace to talk to you about apps. I'll be joining David and Tatsuo with regular posts here.

I got a new Surface with Windows RT in December, and it’s been my preferred method of wasting time ever since. Games, IM, memes, videos of people falling down… there’s a whole world of possibilities out there, so luckily, I’ve also come across a few apps that help me save some time (or just make life a little easier). Here are a few of my favorite time-saving and time-wasting apps.

Using a gallery wallpaper on your lock screen in Windows 8 or Windows RT

MCA Article Feed.

The other day I was looking at comments people had left in the Personalization Gallery, and I noticed that someone asked, “How can I change my cartoon Space Needle lock screen picture to something different?”

After getting over my surprise that not everyone loves the Space Needle as much as those of us here in the Pacific Northwest, it occurred to me what a great opening this is to not only tell you how incredibly easy it is to change your lock screen image, but also show you how you can use any of the wallpapers on the Personalization Gallery to personalize Windows 8 and Windows RT in a variety of ways.

Here’s how:
